Shorty Bank

Gordon Patterson’s family lived ‘down Shorty Bank’ on Short Street, which was at the end of our street over Smeaton Street. Their house was about halfway up the steep street and had a high front door step. Whenever there was a heavy rainstorm, the street flooded and usually lapped their step rather than flooding the house, but they were not always so lucky. The street was practically in ‘the works’ and backed onto the steel works. Hetherington’s hire yard was at the bottom of Shorty Bank, adjacent to the Coal Depot.

Ruby Murray – ‘Softly Softly’  1954
Softly, softly come to me
Touch my lips so tenderly
Softly, softly turn the key
And open up my heart
