Roseberry Topping

Some of our favourite days out were to Fairy Dell, Ormesby Bank and Roseberry Topping. A United bus ride terminated at the village of Great Ayton, the original home of Lieutenant James Cook’s family. A pleasant walk through farmland along a bridle path led to a steep climb up the grassy slope.

Roseberry Topping is about 350 metres high and affords magnificent views of the surrounding countryside and distant coast. We threw stones into the wind and watched them being blown back. About ten kilometres to the south west, the thin needle-like obelisk of Captain Cook’s Monument can be seen on the horizon. Deep banks of drift snow along stone walls or in deep ravines can still be seen well into the spring.
