North Ormesby

North Ormesby however, lies a few kilometres north and was part of the construction of terrace houses. These were built by the Pennyman family who owned the land, to house the workforce required for the rapidly growing industries. Most of the streets were named after the family.

Smeaton Street separated the river, Furnaces Shipyard, Smiths Dock and the steel rolling mills of Dorman and Long, from the houses. Hymers Street ran at right angles off this road and at number 61, on 20th September 1941 I was born in my mam and dad’s bed. In the same bed, Tommy my older brother was born in 1938 and my sister Coral in 1945, which I suppose labels us all as ‘war babies’.
